Michelle Wu is elected mayor of Boston.

Boston City Councilor Wu (D), with 91,794 (64.0%), defeats fellow councilor Anissa Essaibi-George (D) with 51,125 (35.6%). Voter turnout is 144,380 or 32.7%. Wu, 36, is the first woman and first person of color to be elected mayor of Boston and the youngest since 1905. In her victory speech at the Cyclorama building, Wu tells her supporter, “One of my sons asked me the other night if boys could be elected mayor of Boston. And I told him, ‘They have been and will again some day. But not tonight.'”
